well, what I thought, when you open up the file in notepad, some words are visible. Wouldn't changing those words thus change strings?

I doubt it. If anything is unencrypted, its likely to be information to identify itself, so if it words that may relate to a pc/mac connection and itunes, i would avoid editing them.
