Well first you need to choose what distribution of linux you would like to download. Linux isn't a single program but, I would probably suggest starting with Mandrake, Debain, or Red Hat

Well it depends are you going to place Red Hat on a different partition or are you going to totally over write your pc which then you will have to reinstall everything. Also, when using a different platform such as linux you have to be aware that some windows applications won't be able to work because windows, apple, and linux have different types of extensions that they use to run their programs on like .exe so on and so forth. To run certain windows applications you will have to use programs like "wine emulator" but, most products will supply a windows based and linux based applications. So that's just so you know that not everything you have on your pc now is going to be able to run on your linux pc but, their will be different programs that pretty much do the same job and act the same way... if you still want to continue making your pc a linux pc I can try to help you as much as I can

You need to know what you're doing before you accidentally delete all your data. Do you know how to set up a new partition?

You just need to partition your disk (there should be a program included with Linux to do so). Or you can do it on Windows too with a program like Norton Partition Magic. Linux distributions will come with a bootloader. Grub is the best bootloader and the most popular one. Grub will give you a choice to boot all the OS installed on your computer. This is what grub looks like. I recommend using Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Fedora Core. They have proven to be my favorite distributions so far.
