can you boot mac osx from an external hard drive (AKA iPod Video 80gb)?

im very noobish to this whole osx86 thing.

so im planning on getting a new touch when it comes out so i will have a useless 80gb ipod video. im thinking either selling it or booting osx from it. my laptop basically only has 1 drive (2 if you count the 5gb backup hard drive). its a hp pavilion dv6000 (dv6282ea to be exact). so i would either need to reformat my existing drive (which i dont want to do) or use an external hard drive. from what i understand i need a bios that supports booting from external hard drive but i dont know if thats the case. if some1 could explain all this or point me to a useful tutorial than that would be awesome.

right now i have a hp pavilion laptop running vista. i want it to run osx too. you get best results using a separate HD but since i dont have 2 HD's in my laptop i was wondering if you can use an external HD (in my case an ipod) to install osx on, and i could plug in my ipod, reboot the computer, and choose osx and i would have osx on my laptop

OH! Yeah I know what you are talking about. I am not sure if you could use your iPod. Well I guess it is possible... but most people would buy an external HD because it is faster and has a large capacity, if you are going to sell it, I would go ahead and try this, it won't hurt you or it if it doesn't work, I do know it works on other external hard-drives.

you could create an additional partition next to the default C one, but that depends on how many GB your HD has...I don't recommend this whole thing if you have only a 40GB HD or less

i have 120gb drive. which really means 106. and i have 35-40 left.

will the partition need to hold just the operating system or the OS and all the files and programs? like could i access music on my windows partition from osx? and if install new osx applications where would they go?

i don't know if osx can access NTFS. install it and find out.
but basically, yes. the partition should be able to hold the os, the programs and the files (unless it can access NTFS).

Yes it can, I was able to access to my files that were on my NTFS (XP) partition from Leopard.
But you can't access Leopard's partition from XP...

I saw a tutorial on this over at (a warez website) I will try and find it again and post it, but I know its possible.

merged: you can put "mac on a stick" on your iPod... I will try and find the real deal though...

i'm not sure what you're talking about, but if you're talking about the mac on a stick i know, than i'm pretty sure that not what israel is looking for. the mac on stick i know is very old version of osx.
