Default RAM upgrade?

well the PC at my dads house is on its last leg, it takes 20 minutes to start up and shut down, iTunes barely opens and if you try to run itunes and anything else at the same time the computer has a heart attack and shuts down. after numerous clean ups and defragments and me manually going through every program and deleting the ones I dont need. I have done spyware/virus scans with norton, mcafee, cyberhawk, and spybot search and destroy. Its still the same the computer just sucks. It has 256 mb of ram.

So here is my question. Would it be worth it to upgrade the RAM to 1GB? or would it be better off just to get a new computer (this one is 5 or 6 years old) How much does RAM cost and is it easy to upgrade?

haha yea well ive done all kinds of upgrades to my comps as well as my friends... processor swaps, sound cards installations, graphics card installations, and ram installations... as far as easiest thing to upgrade its ram FOR SURE... it so unbelievably easy to do, all u do is take out the old one and snap the new one in, the comp automatically recognizes it, and no driver installations or nething!
ram is generally cheap, but depending if its ddr2 and the speed... but judging on the comps age its jus ddr and a regular speed, so the ram would b very cheap and a better choice than buying a whole new comp, given that the other components in the comp arent TOTAL crap...
yea 1 gb is good but if ur running xp 2gb is ideal... jus check the price on it... and make sure ur motherboard can handle the speed as well as the amount of memory... if u can afford 2gb do it for sure, that is the perfect amount for xp!
go to www.newegg.com, they hav all the best prices and the best shipping also... they r VERY reliable, one of the best online sites EVER! ordered at least 50 items from them over the years...
and finally, hav u ever formatted ur disk? that is a complete erase of all the stuff on ur hdd, including the os which u will hav to reinstall, but it runs like the first day u got the comp... it takes out all the little junk crammed into ur hdd and os... personally i recommend u do a format every 2 yrs...

and to check ddr or ddr2, the amount of memory and the speed jus check ur instruction manual, i hav 2 dells and it tells u in there for sure....

How old of a computer are we talking about?
Because if it's really old, it's not gonna support the 2 gigs without a motherboard upgrade too. which costs wayyy to much.

But yhea, I would get the ram, if it's supported. New egg is perdy good about helping you out when looking for stuff.

And yhea, download CCcleaner, and run Defrag a few times. If all of the above don't work, then Formating your HD is prolly your best bet.

agreed.... like i said the 2 gb is the best bet if it is supported, and everything else on the comp isnt total crap... most likely the cost will b ok... and i still STRONGLY suggest u format ur HDD trust it makes a diff, u can get tutorials on how to do it all over the internet... its a little scary to do but ive done 4 of them now its it rlly isnt thaat bad...
and yes newegg is the BEST again trust me on that... if u wind up getting the ram get it from them!
